Pingxiang SunbiZitan Scenic Area: A Unique Garden Design by UAD

Creating a Cultural Landscape with Traditional Charm

In the context of new urbanization, Pingxiang SunbiZitan Scenic Area showcases the cultural heritage of Tianzhong Ancient Town while enhancing the city's urban culture. This garden design combines park development and ancient town protection, creating a significant cultural landscape with a long history and the largest scale in Pingxiang.

SunbiZitan Scenic Area, designed by the renowned firm UAD, is located at the southwest corner of the park, covering an area of approximately 110,000 square meters. What sets this garden apart is its incorporation of traditional village layout features. The design includes several traditional residence-style commercial buildings arranged in small clusters, bringing together various commercial functions. Water flows through these clusters, and pedestrian bridges connect the scattered walking spaces, forming a harmonious commercial and leisure walking block with separate water systems and linked lands.

The buildings in SunbiZitan Scenic Area follow the Chinese traditional wooden structure with mortise and tenon joints. By using waterproof, fireproof, and insect-proof timbers, the design minimizes the need for metal connectors. The main materials used include lauan wood, rammed-earth walls, and small gray tiles. The hard landscape features natural stone slabs with anti-slip surfaces and an old-style treatment, while native tree species are planted to enhance the natural ambiance.

The project encompasses a gross floor area of 5,680 square meters, primarily accommodating catering and commerce functions. The hard landscapes cover an area of 14,172 square meters, while green land and water occupy 90,548 square meters. This thoughtful distribution ensures a balance between built structures and natural elements, creating a serene and inviting environment.

To achieve a commercial block with friendly and pleasant scales and details, the UAD design team was involved in the entire process on-site. From spatial scales to material selection and construction details, every aspect was carefully considered to ensure the desired outcome.

The Pingxiang SunbiZitan Scenic Area project took place from June 19, 2013, to June 2019 in the Tianzhong Area of Pingxiang, Jiangxi Province. The design process involved extensive research, including site investigations, studies of local historical documents, and immersion in the local community to understand the area's unique characteristics and incorporate them into the design.

This exceptional garden design by UAD has received recognition for its excellence. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in Landscape Planning and Garden Design in 2022. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. The SunbiZitan Scenic Area perfectly embodies these qualities, providing a fulfilling and positive experience for visitors while contributing to a better world.
